Where’s Bryan Fischer’s morality?

Regarding our most recent (it pains me to have to use that adjective) mass murder on US soil – specifically the most recent (pain, again) at a school, Bryan Fischer, Director of Issues Analysis for the American Family Association (AFA), said with empathy and a heartwarming tone:

Where was God when all this went down? Here’s the bottom line, God is not going to go where he is not wanted.

Now we have spent since 1962…telling God to get lost, telling God we do not want you in our schools, we don’t want to pray to you in our schools, we do not want to pray to your before football games, we don’t want to pray to you at graduations, we don’t want anybody talking about you in a graduation speech…And I think God would say to us, ‘Hey, I’ll be glad to protect your children, but you’ve got to invite me back into your world first. I’m not going to go where I’m not wanted. I am a gentleman.

The upshot to this statement is this: his god doesn’t give a shit, Fischer doesn’t give a shit, and Fischer doesn’t want anyone else to give a shit that kids were killed by a gunman because his oft-persecuted, minority religion has been thwarted in their efforts to force a religion in the public forum – despite the obvious, copious documentation against that intrusion in our law. He wants to steer the conversation away from the fact that a deranged lunatic used high-powered, high-capacity weapons that were not his own to gun down children, and adults who were entrusted with their protection, at a public school.

Fischer is trying to make a point in favor of his position that his religion should be allowed to do whatever the fuck it wants to do to anyone, anywhere and in any situation. Kids got killed by a gunman? Fischer’s god is not to blame. His opinion is that “you who denied us the access to continue brainwashing kids – whether or not their homes and families embraced said religion – in schools and all public places outside the home are to blame.”

Of course, Fischer’s god can’t be everywhere at once and see everything at once. He is not omnipresent or omniscient or omnipotent or anything. His ability to influence the lives of mortals is limited unless you invite him in.

(Kinda like a vampire. It seems that Fischer is having trouble separating his fictional characters and their backstories.)

So let’s review his god’s quotation from the sociopath who is Bryan Fischer. (Yes, sociopath is correct – he lacks empathy and sympathy, warmth, and charm. I believe that the gunman and Fischer had/have sociopathic tendencies. Come to think of it, according to Fischer, his god’s actions and attributions demonstrate that his god is also a sociopath) Essentially, his god is saying that even though I could protect these kids from that mean man, I didn’t.

Why? To prove a point.

Asshole god.

So when does god protect people from the bad guys? Lots of times. Really.

I remember hearing that god prevented innocent people from being slaughtered in the Twin Towers. Oh, wait, He didn’t save them because of the gays.

I also remember fondly how the big guy in the sky saved all of those people in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in God-Fearing Oklahoma City. Oh, yeah. Free will.

• December 11, 2012. On Tuesday, 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts killed 2 people and himself with a stolen rifle in Clackamas Town Center, Oregon. His motive is unknown.
• September 27, 2012. Five were shot to death by 36-year-old Andrew Engeldinger at Accent Signage Systems in Minneapolis, MN. Three others were wounded. Engeldinger went on a rampage after losing his job, ultimately killing himself.
• August 5, 2012. Six Sikh temple members were killed when 40-year-old US Army veteran Wade Michael Page opened fire in a gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Four others were injured, and Page killed himself.
• July 20, 2012. During the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, CO, 24-year-old James Holmes killed 12 people and wounded 58. Holmes was arrested outside the theater.
• May 29, 2012. Ian Stawicki opened fire on Cafe Racer Espresso in Seattle, WA, killing 5 and himself after a citywide manhunt.
• April 6, 2012. Jake England, 19, and Alvin Watts, 32, shot 5 black men in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in racially motivated shooting spree. Three died.
• April 2, 2012. A former student, 43-year-old One L. Goh killed 7 people at Oikos University, a Korean Christian college in Oakland, CA. The shooting was the sixth-deadliest school massacre in the US and the deadliest attack on a school since the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre.

Those were good saves by the big guy. Except they weren’t.

Oh, and how can we forget how he saves all of the victims of incest and domestic violence in the christian families across the US. Except, he doesn’t.

It seems to me that a religion that characterizes its main character in language like “son of god” and “lamb of god”, would  do more to protect children from harm. You’d expect a country that emblazons its currency with “in god we trust” and whose federal governing body almost to a person belongs to an abrahamic religion to have the protection of this invisible guy in the sky. But he/she/it doesn’t care. There could be a reason: he/she/it doesn’t exist.

Bryan Fischer is not a nice man. His organization, the American Family Association is not a good group.
